– For your consideration is this absolutely wild 1965 Gibson SG Junior, which was heavily modified for a Mr. Fabian Mayorga by Arturo Valdez in the 1970’s.
– With his shop a cornerstone of “guitar row” on Sunset Blvd. for many decades, Arturo Valdez was known as “guitar repairman to the stars” from the early-1960’s all the way until the 21st century.
– This is a prime example of Valdez’s work: creative, inventive, irreverent, sacrilegious, and quite sloppy. He often butchered perfectly good guitars at the request of cocaine-fueled customers.
– This guitar started life as a ’65 SG Junior. Valdez added: a pickup with corresponding controls (and holes), purfling, binding, inlays, a custom truss rod cover, posts for a tune-o-matic, anchors for a wrap-around bridge, and more. He refinished it, refretted it, and added stingers. He enlarged the P-90 pickup route and the back control cavity, while filling the original wrap around post holes. He literally left no square inch of this guitar alone, and holy moly is it amazingly cool.
– Over the many decades since Fabian originally modified his SG, it appears to have suffered an additional headstock break which was resultantly never repaired. It is subsequently being sold as-is, with the peghead completely broken off from the neck.
– The non-original hardware was removed, and yes of course it was gold.
– While Mr. Mayorga claims this is a ’63 SG, the transitional nut width of 1 5/8″ suggests a ’65 production. Though it could not have been produced after 1965 as the confluence of the small pickguard profile (visible holes having been filled) and the nut width all but pinpoints it having been made in early-mid 1965.
– Neck depth at the 1st fret is .865″, and .885″ depth at the 12th fret.
– This guitar deserves a proper restoration, as it is truly a beautiful one-of-a-kind abomination.
– The matching original smooth tolex hard case with yellow interior is being sold separately.
